extension spring can have a preload at zero deflection

Initial Tension

Most extension springs are wound with initial tension. This is an internal force that holds the coils tightly together. The measure of the initial tension is the load necessary to overcome the internal force and just start coil separation. Unlike a compression spring, which has zero load at zero deflection, an extension spring can have a preload at zero deflection.

Initial-Tension

Note that there is a range of stress (and, therefore, force) for any spring index that can be held without problems. If the designer needs an extension spring with no initial tension, the spring should be designed with space between the coils.

HOOK STRESSES:

Often stresses are higher in the spring ends than in the spring body. Unless special design precautions are taken, the allowable body stress must be reduced.  The hook stress in torsion should not exceed 40-45 percent of tensile strength, while hook stress in bending should not exceed 75 percent of tensile strength.

The maximum bending stress in a machine loop (see spring image below) occurs at location B, while the maximum torsion stress occurs at T. Stresses at these locations are estimated as follows:

 Equations Spring-Stresses-Diagram

How It Works & Principles of Operation Leaf spring

Traditionally, automotive suspension has been a compromise among three conflicting criteria: road handling, load carrying and passenger comfort. The suspension system must support the vehicle, provide directional control during handling maneuvers, and provide effective insulation for passengers and payload from disturbances.Ride comfort requires a soft suspension, whereas load carrying requires a stiff suspension. However, good handling combined with an acceptable ride requires a setting somewhere between the two. Because of these conflicting demands, the rear leaf spring suspension design fitted to pickup trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles has had to be something of a compromise due to the type of vehicle use. Leaf springs are a passive suspension system that have the ability to store energy via the spring and dissipate it by a damper. Its parameters however, are generally fixed and limited.Roadmaster Active Suspension (RAS) overcomes the limitations of passive suspension by introducing mechanically active suspension to the rear leaf springs thereby conquering the traditional three-way load vs handling vs comfort conflict. Once fitted, RAS has the ability to store, dissipate and introduce energy to the system. Being mechanical its action is immediate, unlike hydraulics or air which take time to react. This immediate action is also variable, working in exact counter proportion to force applied, hence the term active.Roadmaster Active Suspension kits consist of a set of two very powerful, variable rated, coil springs designed to support and assist rear leaf springs with up to a one ton carrying capacity.Once installed, loaded tension from the eye-to-axle mounted coil tension springs hold the leaf springs in their original designed bowed position. When strain from load or vehicle weight shift is applied to the leaf springs, the stabilizers come into action immediately, absorbing the force of the load. Being variable rated, the greater the strain, the more counter-assistance force from the RAS unit.By introducing a powerful ‘load absorbing‘ spring steel coil system to rear leaf springs, RAS greatly assists the carrying capability of the vehicle as stipulated by the manufacturers. RAS absorbs the load that would otherwise cause bottoming out and thereby provides the benefits of a more level and thus safer ride.On cornering, RAS reduces body roll by supporting the springs which are taking the increased load. By not allowing these springs to flatten out, the vehicle corners more level with greater contact of all four tires to the road. Improved traction translates to better control and handling.

When towing a boat, trailer, camper or other heavy equipment, Roadmaster Active Suspension adds strength to the rear leaf springs while absorbing the increased load. The resulting stability and reduced sway are felt immediately.

Roadmaster Active Suspension can be independently adjusted to compensate for an unbalanced load such as that of ahandicap lift device.

As there is no movement on the leaf spring eye bracket or axle bracket, no friction takes place. All movement evolves from the articulating roller on the axle bracket which will adjust itself to any alignment of the tension spring, irrespective of the up and down deflection and reflection of the leaf spring. The coil tension spring, having an articulated connection insures that the axle and coil spring are always aligned in the direction of the force being applied. Because of the mechanical action of the tension spring, which is instant from left rear to right rear and vice versa, the stability of the vehicle is greatly improved.

Roadmaster Active Suspension is designed to eliminate shock on the suspension itself, thus extending the life of the leafs springs, shock absorbers, shackles, and even tires.

coil springs for mechanical applications

Tinmy Spring™ canted coil springs for mechanical applications
Our Tinmy Spring™ canted coil springs for latching, locking, and holding applications are available in coiled diameters from 0.020 in. (0.51 mm), and in a variety of materials and surface finishes. In addition to fastening or latching, the canted coil spring can be designed to permanently lock two pieces together, or to perform a holding function whereby it provides a specific amount of drag between two components. Depending on design requirements, a spring may be engineered to require as much as 900–1,000 shearing lbs to release the two pieces.

Our mechanical spring technology is used in a broad range of industries and applications, including gear drives, pumping equipment, dispensing machines, mixing equipment, food processing machinery and safety devices.
Enforcer™ high force canted coil spring

We’ve combined our proven Tinmy Spring™ technology with advanced manufacturing techniques to deliver the Enforcer™ high force canted coil spring, a mechanical fastening component with insertion and removal forces that can be precisely controlled to 10,000+ lb, depending on size and other factors. The Enforcer™, which offers design engineers an excellent alternative to disposable shear pins, complex ball detent assemblies, and other traditional fastening technologies, provides repeatable performance over multiple service cycles. It can be piston or housing mounted, and can also be engineered with relatively low insertion force to simplify the reattachment of parts.

Available in a variety of materials, including stainless steels and nickel-based alloys, the Enforcer provides up to a 10X increase in force over our existing Tinmy Spring™ product line.

When made from a nickel-based alloy wire material with a diameter of 0.031 in., Enforcer high force canted coil springs with a 1-in. ID demonstrated an initial removal force of over 2000 lb, and maintained a removal force of more than 1700 lb after five cycles. In independent testing, larger diameter Enforcer springs consistently demonstrated removal forces greater than 10,000 lb.

The Enforcer™ high force canted coil spring (left) has a higher coil density than Tinmy Seal Engineering's typical Tinmy Spring™ product line. Both spring types provide precisely controllable latching and locking functionality, but the Enforcer's design enables it to offer forces 10X higher than the Tinmy Spring.

graph_107MB_25percent_deflection_02

Results of insertion and removal cycle testing on an Enforcer high force canted coil spring made from a nickel-based alloy material. The 1-in. ID spring was mounted in a groove on a 1.5-in. piston. Insertion values dropped dramatically after initial cycle, and removal forces decreased much more gradually. Testing indicated stabilization of removal forces beyond five cycles. Note: values are dependent upon specific spring design.

Typical Applications

Our Enforcer high force canted coil spring answers a growing demand for more cost-effective high force latching options in:

  • Downhole tools (LWD/MWD, plug setting, retrieval) and subsea valves used in oil and gas operations

  • Surgical tools

  • Aerospace equipment (cargo retention, aircraft tug tow bars)

  • Maritime/shipbuilding equipment
